Showing Our Values Through Education on Oral Health
This month marked the beginning of our partnership with Jason Robinson Sports Stars with three of our lucky chosen schools having the privilege of a coaching team for 12 weeks, as well as Jason himself attending to host an assembly.
The three schools we visited this month were Harpenden Academy, St Matthews in Luton and Beecroft Academy in Dunstable. Right from the start, we could see the excitement on the children’s faces as they arrived, waiting to find out what was in store.
Jason was fantastic at getting the children engaged while talking about his journey throughout his rugby career, telling the children of all of his incredible achievements like winning the Rugby World Cup and receiving his MBE/OBE. Throughout his talk, he reminded the children that he was told he was too small and not strong enough to do well in rugby, but his persistence and hard work meant that he could achieve these amazing things.
Jason introduced the Obex team and explained our mission to educate on oral health and keeping our mouths clean and healthy.
Tarryn Jackson and Abigail Castle had the opportunity to talk to the children in small groups and show how we brush our teeth (using our trusty Tony the Dinosaur!) as well as educating on balanced diets, hidden sugars and why our teeth are so important. The children loved the games we played, and all learnt something new.
The most important takeaway from these visits is hearing from the head teachers how some of the children who attend the school do not have the best support or education to look after their oral health and we are now planning our next steps on how we can help support the schools further.
